About the Author
When I was in elementary school, I used to ignore my teachers’ carefully crafted lesson plans, preferring instead to study the Rand McNally industrial-sized map adorning the wall. The laminated guide to the world led me to imagine journeys in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, and Paducah. In my mind, Kentucky was as exotic as Kathmandu and Greenland as thrilling as Jerusalem.
Thanks to the patience and adventuresome spirit of my kids, this is still how I feel. I couldn’t have asked for better travel partners than Neah and Kylie. No matter where we go, we find adventure, from North Dakota to the North Shore. We learn – about our destinations and about each other.
The genesis for Beautiful States of Mind began in 2014. During a much anticipated trip to New York, I managed to weather the obstacles that accompany a newly divorced father toting two young children halfway across the country. In the process we learned cooperation, teamwork, and unity. This sparked a desire for me to travel the country with my kids, bonding while exploring the wonders of all 50 states.
I would like to thank everyone who has helped me turn the pages of travel in my life. My cousins, who dragged me along on spring break excursions when I was in high school. My mom for giving me a love for words and words of love throughout my existence. My dad for forcing me to stretch my mind as well as my physical limits. Adonia, for being the best sister a brother could ask for and helping me articulate our shared experience growing up. Isabel, for her steadfast support, understanding, and unconditional love. And my extended family for their generous souls and free spirits.
To everyone who has shared a journey with me, thanks for the companionship and memories. These are moments that I will cherish forever. Moments that make me who I am.
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”
